Summit & Back Again ("the App") is a personal hiking log app. This page explains what information the App accesses, how it is used, and who it is shared with.
Location data. While you are recording a hike, the App accesses your device's precise location (including in the background, if you grant that permission) so it can record your route, distance, elevation, and pace. Location data is also used to look up local weather information (see below).
Hike records stay on your device. Routes, hike summaries, checklists, and goals are stored locally in the App's database on your phone. We do not operate a server, and this data is never uploaded to us or any third party.
Weather lookups. To show forecasts and weather alerts for your hike location, the App sends your approximate coordinates to the U.S. National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), a free public service operated by NOAA. No account, identifier, or other personal information is sent with these requests. The National Weather Service's own privacy policy applies to this data: weather.gov/privacy.
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for advertising or marketing. The App does not include any analytics, advertising, or tracking software, and there are no user accounts or sign-in.
You can disable location permissions for the App at any time in your device settings. Because the App's core purpose is recording hikes via GPS, denying location access will prevent hike recording from working, but the rest of the App (e.g. viewing past hikes, checklists, goals) will continue to function.
Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored hike data from your device.
The App is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from children.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same URL with a revised effective date.
